Jon will refocus the sheriff’s office on its core mission—Law Enforcement. He’ll prioritize proactive policing by increasing visible patrol coverage, especially in underserved rural areas, to deter crime. Deputies will be equipped with state-of-the-art tools, receive comprehensive training, and have the support needed to perform their jobs effectively and safely. Additionally, Jon will expand the use of advanced technologies, including AI, to enhance crime detection, improve operational efficiency, and optimize response times. All of this will be done with a steadfast commitment to protecting constitutional rights, ensuring transparency, maintaining accountability, and delivering real results.
Jon is dedicated to reducing drug trafficking and drug-related crimes—including violence, theft, and overdose deaths—with a strong emphasis on targeting fentanyl. His approach prioritizes holding offenders accountable while ensuring those struggling with addiction are connected to community-based prevention and treatment programs, supporting rehabilitation and reducing repeat offenses.
Oilfield theft is an escalating threat in southeastern New Mexico, costing the oil and gas industry millions of dollars each year due to stolen crude oil, equipment, copper, and other valuable resources, as well as production losses and property damage. These crimes are often carried out by organized groups using insider access, fake crews, and unmarked vehicles to evade law enforcement. The consequences are felt locally—lost jobs, higher insurance rates, and reduced tax revenue that supports schools and infrastructure. As sheriff, Jon will lead a coordinated effort with industry partners, landowners, and state and federal agencies to increase patrols, deploy surveillance technology, and aggressively target those responsible for these high-impact thefts.
Jon will continue to support community engagement programs that bring deputies and residents together to build trust, strengthen relationships, and work as partners in public safety. These programs include neighborhood meetings, school outreach, youth mentorship, community events, and partnerships with local organizations. By keeping open lines of communication and encouraging citizen involvement, we can address concerns before they become problems, improve understanding between law enforcement and the public, and create stronger, safer communities across Lea County.
