Jon Martinez, a conservative Republican and unapologetic patriot, is running for Lea County Sheriff to continue a life of dedicated service to his community and country. With over 32 years of law enforcement experience and 28 years proudly served within the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, Jon brings a deep understanding of public safety, strong leadership, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the citizens of Lea County.
Jon began his law enforcement career in November 1992, serving first as a police officer with the Truth or Consequences Police Department, followed by his role as a deputy sheriff with the Otero County Sheriff’s Office. In August 1997, he joined the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked his way up through the ranks to his current position as Chief Deputy and Division Commander. Over the past 20 years, Jon has held key leadership positions within the sheriff’s office, including serving as Division Commander for the Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Courts, and Records Divisions, as well as the Lea County Drug Task Force Commander and Assistant SWAT Commander. He is also responsible for drafting and updating policies and procedures for the sheriff's office—vital directives that provide clear guidance to deputies in the field and ensure duties are carried out in accordance with legal standards and best practices.
Before entering law enforcement, Jon proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1986 to 1991 as a Security Police Officer, stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico. His military experience helped shape the discipline, integrity, and mission-focused mindset he brings to every role he’s held since.
Jon is supported by his wife, Angela Martinez, the Director of the Lea County Communications Authority (LCCA)—the county’s 911 emergency call center. Angela has served in the emergency communications field since 1998. Their son, Jon Martinez Jr., continues the family legacy of service as a Corporal with the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, where he serves as a patrol supervisor, field training officer, and drone pilot.
Why Jon Martinez is Running for Sheriff
With nearly three decades of service in the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, Jon Martinez is running for sheriff to continue working side by side with the courageous and hard-working deputies who risk their lives every day in the service of others, and the dedicated support staff who work tirelessly to uphold the sheriff’s office's mission. His primary goal is to ensure that each member of the sheriff’s office has the necessary training, resources, and leadership to perform their jobs safely and effectively, thereby keeping our families and communities safe.
As Sheriff, Jon Martinez Is Committed To:
Reducing Crime in Lea County
Jon will refocus the sheriff’s office on its core mission—Law Enforcement. He’ll prioritize proactive policing by increasing visible patrol coverage, especially in underserved rural areas, to deter crime. Deputies will be equipped with state-of-the-art tools, receive comprehensive training, and have the support needed to perform their jobs effectively and safely. Additionally, Jon will expand the use of advanced technologies, including AI, to enhance crime detection, improve operational efficiency, and optimize response times. All of this will be done with a steadfast commitment to protecting constitutional rights, ensuring transparency, maintaining accountability, and delivering real results.
Reducing Drug Trafficking and Drug-Related Crimes
Jon is dedicated to reducing drug trafficking and drug-related crimes—including violence, theft, and overdose deaths—with a strong emphasis on targeting fentanyl. His approach prioritizes holding offenders accountable while ensuring those struggling with addiction are connected to community-based prevention and treatment programs, supporting rehabilitation and reducing repeat offenses.
Combatting Oilfield Theft to Protect the Economy and Communities
Oilfield theft is an escalating threat in southeastern New Mexico, costing the oil and gas industry millions of dollars each year due to stolen crude oil, equipment, copper, and other valuable resources, as well as production losses and property damage. These crimes are often carried out by organized groups using insider access, fake crews, and unmarked vehicles to evade law enforcement. The consequences are felt locally—lost jobs, higher insurance rates, and reduced tax revenue that supports schools and infrastructure. As sheriff, Jon will lead a coordinated effort with industry partners, landowners, and state and federal agencies to increase patrols, deploy surveillance technology, and aggressively target those responsible for these high-impact thefts.
Building Trust Through Community Engagement
Jon will continue to support community engagement programs that bring deputies and residents together to build trust, strengthen relationships, and work as partners in public safety. These programs include neighborhood meetings, school outreach, youth mentorship, community events, and partnerships with local organizations. By keeping open lines of communication and encouraging citizen involvement, we can address concerns before they become problems, improve understanding between law enforcement and the public, and create stronger, safer communities across Lea County.
Jon Martinez humbly asks for your support and your vote in the upcoming Republican Primary Election on June 2, 2026. With your trust, he will continue to protect and serve with honor, integrity, and the values of Lea County.
